"Trip-hop posesses the unique ability to capture various angles of a faceless metropolis in stark light, like the shivers of steel train tracks, the low thuds of a distant nightclub or the rustle of torn-down posters being trampled underfoot. The fact that Mockbirth are from Greece makes Eskimo an entirely more veracious proposition entirely, encapsulating not only the feeling in Athens but an entire nation struggling to get up off its knees. As the down-tempo bass-lines and sinister percussion gloomily go about their business, the contempt of Ted Reglis’ acid tongue on lines like ‘Oh, the air’s so common, it’s a pity / If I could I would buy it off of this fucking city’ leaves a lasting, uneasy impression."
"Picture an abandoned underground station, with its scattered rubble and post-war propaganda posters that peel at the corners each time a distant echo of life travels through the nearby dissonant wasteland. This is where Mockbirth dwell, architects of the underbelly, manipulating their down-tempo trip-hop vibes to make ancient dust shiver off rusty metal pipes in the hope that enough accumulates to cause a zephyr. ‘Thrall’ is everything this particularly urban genre can stir, without the cliches."

"Melancholy in tone, this EP’s emotional impact is way beyond a characterisation as simplistic as ‘sad’ or ‘regretful’; it packs as much affective punch as a dozen ordinary albums, and the songwriting is a masterclass."

An interview. A different one! Thanks to Niki Sotiropoulou and DOH! ]

Interviewed by Noted! ]

We talk to Jim Ver and Ted Reglis, otherwise known as Mockbirth, about the awful social state of Greece, Tom Waits, Charles Bukowski and the blurring of lines between scenes and cultures.
